Kitui government has said it will spend Sh110 million on a programme dubbed "Pro-poor Support". The county administration said it is concerned about the “makeshift and eye sore” number of primary schools. The project is meant to buy education facilities where pupils sit on the floor. Kitui Governor Julius Malombe said they will also build classrooms to avoid learning does not take place in mud-walled and grass-thatched structures. Malombe said it is regrettable that pupils learn in such deplorable infrastructure in these modern times. He urged MPs in the county to spend CDF to refurbish schools even though that is the role of the national government. “Pupils in makeshift schools sit for the same examination as those in good schools. They cannot compete fairly,” Malombe said. He added: “I have directed the education department to map out and identify schools with makeshift structures so that they can be improved.” Malombe said Kenya Airways and the Commission for Revenue Allocation boss Micah Cheserem had offered to assist one of the affected schools. Cheserem is said to have broken down when he found pupils learning in makeshift classrooms at Lingithya Primary School in Ikutha district during a visit last month. Malombe was addressing the media on Friday where he appealed to the national government to intervene. The committee chairman of Nzungui Primary School Muthengi Mwanduka, said high levels of poverty and hunger caused by inadequate rains impede efforts to develop the schools. “The pupils brave the cold during the rainy season. They learn their clothes and books are soaked in water,” Mwanduka said. Area MP Mutua Muluvi said he will soon tour the constituency to acquaint himself with the problems affecting the schools. 'I can assure you that everything will be done to ensure that all children receive the desired quality of education. Good structures will be put up to ensure standards are no longer compromised,” Muluvi said.
