Kiwifruit- The kiwi was first named the Chinese gooseberry, but was later changed to "kiwi". The kiwi was named after the brown, round, flightless bird that is native to New Zealand, because they resemble each other. The French call this fruit "souris vegetalae" translated as "vegetable mouse." The kiwi is native to south and central China, but commercial cultivation began in New Zealand in the 1930s. Kiwi is an extremely nutrient-dense food. They contain high concentrations of vitamins and minerals per calorie compared to other fruits. Kiwis are an exceptional source of vitamin C. A single fruit delivers 115 percent of the U.S. RDA. Kiwis are also rich in iron, folate, potassium and fiber.
