Knee Replacement information from the Surgery Department: Nemaha Valley Community Hospital has been performing Total Knee Replacements since 2003. Joint replacement surgery is one of the greatest medical advances of our time. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year in the United States. A knee replacement (also called knee arthroplasty) might be more accurately termed a knee “resurfacing” because only the surface of the bones are actually replaced. The knee is the largest joint in the body and having healthy knees is vital to perform most everyday activities. The most common cause of chronic knee pain and disability is arthritis. If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be hard for you to perform these simple daily tasks. Signs you are ready for a Knee Replacement: • You have knee pain that keeps you awake, or awakens you at night • You have knee pain which limits activities necessary to go about your daily routine (such as getting up from a chair or climbing the stairs) • Your have knee pain that limits activities that give you pleasure (such as walking for exercise, traveling or shopping) • You have tried other treatments for a reasonable period of time, and still have persistent knee pain The decision to have a total knee replacement surgery should be a cooperative one between you, your family, your primary physician, and your orthopedic surgeon. Your primary physician will refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for a thorough evaluation to determine if you may be a candidate. Dr Kenneth Teter, MD from Tallgrass Orthopedic and Sports Medicine of Topeka, KS, performs surgery and has an outreach clinic Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.
