He was the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University (1931-36) and Banaras Hindu University (1939-48). Was named Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford. He was the first Vice President of India (1952 – 1962) and the second President of India (1962 – 1967). He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest award of the nation, in 1954. He died on April 17, 1975, at the age of 86.
