Know your rights: This is informational purposes only! You are the one ultimately in control of your destination... IF YOU ARE STOPPED IN YOUR CAR OR ON YOUR BIKE Stop the car/bike in a safe place as quickly as possible. Turn off the car/bike, turn on the internal light, open the window part way and place your hands on the wheel. On your bike keep hands out of pockets. Upon request, show police your drivers license, registration and proof of insurance. If an officer asks to look inside your car/ saddle bags you can refuse to consent to the search. Say No politely and thats it. But if police believe your car contains evidence of a crime, your car can be searched without your consent. Also if something illegal is in plain sight they can search also. Both drivers and passengers have the right to remain silent. If you are a passenger, you can ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says yes, sit silently or calmly leave. Even if the officer says no, you have the right to remain silent. Generally speaking dont add to the conversation even if YOU think it will help. Ask if the officer is going to write a ticket or if you are free to go. This should be your response if he continues to fish with more questions. It also doesnt hurt to ask for a break either, but you must do it before he walks back to his squad. Your responses are what will help you or hurt you. One key thing to remember if the officer asks and doesnt demand something then you probably have a choice and you should know what those choices are. If you are one of those people who just hate cops and cant control your self even when it will hurt you then this info wont help you. A wise man said once its better to sit and look like a fool then to open your mouth and prove it.. IF YOU FEEL YOUR RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED Remember: police misconduct cannot be challenged on the street. Dont physically resist officers or threaten to file a complaint. Write down everything you remember, including officers badge and patrol car numbers, which agency the officers were from, and any other details. Get contact information for witnesses. If you are injured, take photographs of your injuries (but seek medical attention first). File a written complaint with the agencys internal affairs division or civilian complaint board. In most cases, you can file a complaint anonymously if you wish.
