Knowing the Terror of the Lord 2 Corinthians 5:10-11 The fact is, every believer will one day stand before the judgement seat of Christ to give an account of his service for the Lord. Sadly, that reality does not have much of an impact in the lives of many Christians today. At this future time of judgement, the Lord will evaluate not the believers salvation but, rather, his works to see whether or not his service for the Master is worthy of reward. Sin is not the issue here, rather, it is faithfulness to the will of God as revealed in His Word (vv.10-11 cf. 1 Cor.3:9-15). Some believers may not presently care how they live the Christian life here on earth; surely we all have witnesses a lethargic and even indifferent attitude on the part of far too many who seem to have little concern as to whether they are walking in the light of the Word and pleasing their Savior in all they say and do. Yes, it might not matter to them now, but it definitely will one day! At that time of judgement before the Lord, the saint will fully comprehend the holiness and justice of the glorified Savior, but then it will be too late to set right the life carelessly lived. With this future event in mind, the apostle Paul exhorted the notoriously carnal Corinthians (1 Cor.3:1) to sober up: Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men...(v.11). The word terror (Gr.phobos) speaks of the apostles spiritual, healthy fear imbedded deep within his being due to his understanding of the holiness and righteousness of Almighty God. Because of this godly fear, Paul sought to persuade these saints (and us) to be prepared for the judgement day and to make the necessary changes so they will not be ashamed before Him at His coming (1 Jn.2:28).
