Kragfergus Living History Group are to continue a series of free evening seminars at Carrickfergus Town Hall over the next four weeks. Following on from the first two talks, which examined the medieval and Elizabethan periods in Carrick, the next event on Tuesday September 3 will look at the Williamite period in the town. The run up to the siege of Carrickfergus and its effect on the town and its people will be explored, as well as the story of an individual who resided in Carrick and fought in the Williamite Army. Seminar four on September 10 will highlight the role of the United Irishmen, including Henry Joy McCracken, William Orr and Carrick resident J Saunderson. The evening will look at how they were captured, the reason why Orr was hanged in Carrickfergus when Henry Joy McCracken was executed in Belfast, and why Saunderson went free. Meanwhile, Victorian Carrickfergus will be the focus of the fifth event on September 17, including the development of the mills, the building of the railway and the visit from HRH Victoria and Albert. The series will conclude on September 24 with a look at crime and punishment, examining the Carrick prison and why it was closed down in favour of Crumlin Road gaol. Each seminar will take place in the Dobbs Room, Carrick Town Hall from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with guest speakers and re-enactors in costume of the period as well as artefacts to see and touch. Refreshments will be provided at each event.
