Krishnagiri’s food processing units attract global attention CHENNAI: What is common between the auto component cluster of Faridabad, biotech and pharma cluster of Ahmedabad and food processing cluster in Krishnagiri. They are all part of seven micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) clusters that are featured for their innovations in the Global Innovation Index 2013 released by United Nations. The 2013 report emphasises local dynamics of innovation, which have remained undermeasured globally. The report shows the emergence of local innovation ecosystems as key and signals a necessary shift from the tendency to duplicate previously successful models without a focus on localised context. The report features the Moradabad glass industry and the Krishmaa Cluster in Krishnagiri as case studies. The Krishmaa Cluster Development Society, Krishnagiri, has been featured for its innovation in increasing the shelf life of mangoes.It is the only food processing cluster selected by the index in India. "The Krishmaa cluster was started in 2010 as part of the NIC. Around 70 mango processing units and 25,000 farmers are part of the cluster," H M Satyamoorthy, project officer of Krishmaa told TOI. The mango cluster initially was operating with old technology without any knowledge to increase the shelf life as well as value addition. "After interaction with NIC, we involved the farmers and adopted new methods of cultivation since the flowering stage. The new methods apart from increasing the yield also increased the life of mangoes and opened up export opportunities ," said Sathyamoorthy . The cluster then involved its members in value addition and innovated on new products like mango bar, jelly, powder, squash and the latest being mango pickle. The MSMEs featured in the Global Innovation Index 2013 list for their innovations include — auto components cluster in Faridabad, Haryana; ayurveda cluster in Thrissur, Kerala; bamboo cluster in Agartala , Tripura; biotech & pharma cluster in Ahmedabad, Gujarat; brassware cluster in Moradabad , Uttar Pradesh; food processing cluster in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu and furniture cluster in Ernakulam, Kerala. timesofindia.indiatimes/business/india-business/Krishnagiris-food-processing-units-attract-global-attention/articleshow/20905047.cms
