Kristine and I are back from London. Ill be writing an article about the trip, but in brief: saw seven plays, all with something of interest to recommend them (and most with more) and interviewed or had a bite with several writers, actors and directors. Among the highlights--long conversations with Jonathan Miller, Moira Buffini, Bryony Lavery, Nina Raine, Nicholas Wright, Anthony Page, and married couple and gifted actors Jasmine Hyde and Jonathan Tafler, who met us with their dog Rocco and took us to a pub on the Thames in Hammersmith called The Dove. Plays I/we saw--CHARLES III, BEYOND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVER, MERCHANT OF VENICE, TIGER COUNTRY, MADE IN DAGENHAM (musical), TREASURE ISLAND and UPPER CUT. Saw stuff at the National, in the West End, at Hampstead and in a pub theatre. Got happily lost a few times. The purpose of the trip with was to do research for two books, and my publisher was kind enough to also make it possible for my associate, Martha Wade Steketee and her husband (another Jeff) to fly across as well. Very intense week, and Martha and I collected a lot of stuff which now has to be turned into book material. Oh, a shout-out to the Best Western in Paddington where we had a snug but comfortable room for a very good price which was in easy distance of the Paddington Station (which made it a snap to get to and from Heathrow and everywhere else in London). I recommend the place highly. Terrific trip.
