Kudos to Police on declining kidnapping, terror in the east Augustine Chukwudum and Chinedu Onyebuchi The agenda of our monthly meeting held on 26th of August, 2014 was to appraise the security situation in Delta State and South East Region which comprises Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo State. Many issues which affect the citizens that reside in Delta State and South East in relation to security of life and property were discussed. Things that were observed and discussed include thus. (1) We observed that there has been a sharp decline in kidnapping, violent and organized crime in the South East Region and Delta State. (2) We observed an ugly trend which include the sprouting of illegal detention centres established by vigilante operatives in some communities e.g. in Ichi, Ekwusigo Local Government, Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government, Nkpor and Ogidi, both in Idemili North Local Government, Umuchu, Aguata Local Government all in Anambra State. (3) We also observed that Local vigilantes have started mounting illegal checkpoint e.g. in Isouchi near Isouchi police station in Umunneochi Local Government Area Abia State and also Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State. (4) We observed that this decline in kidnapping, violent and other organized crime can be attributed to the priceless effort of the Special Anti Robbery Squad Akwuzu, Inspector General of Police special task force on Terrorism and Heinous Crime Team C, Fegge Police Station Onitsha South L.G.A of Anambra State. B Division Nigerian Police Force Asaba and Delta State Police Command all has join hands in making South East and Delta State a safe haven. (5) We also observed decline in the incessant harassment of law abiding citizens by touts and other illegal bodies in all the major Cities in South East e.g. Onitsha, Umuahia, Okigwe, Owerri, Aba, Nsukka, Enugu, Oji River, Abakaliki, Awka, among others. After deliberating on most issues, we will like to make recommendations (1) We applaud men of special Anti Robbery Squad Akwuzu, the inspector General of Police Special Task force on Terrorism and Heinous Crime Team C., Nigerian Police Force Fegge Division, Nigerian Police Force B Division Asaba and Delta State Police Command and other men of the police force in the region that has contributed pricelessly in making the region a safe haven, we called on the police service commission to identify those officers that has work gallantry and show compensation by promoting and also documenting their modus operandi so that it can be used in future if the need arises. (2) We are against any detention cell apart from the ones recognize by law and therefore call on relevant authorities to ensure that all illegal detention cells in the South East region are dismantle with immediate effect. (3) We call on the relevant authorities to upgrade Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) Akwuzu to South East Special Anti Robbery Squad. (4) We call on all local vigilante groups in the region to work under the supervision of the police in order to checkmate any form of excess that can arise due to lack of proper training. (5) In order to improve the efficiency of the vigilante groups we call on all vigilante groups to ensure that they give account of all their activities and also to keep their arms under Police custody because this will checkmates illegal activities . (6) We call for the improvement of welfare packages of members of police force and also for the upgrading of their insurance packages. (7) We also call for the procurement of equipments use in tracking of kidnappers among others so that the police force can work effectively. (8) We call on the Federal Government to establish police barrack in all the Local Government Areas and to ensure that members of the police Force doesn’t face accommodation issues in South East and the whole country at large because it will help to checkmates compromise in the force thereby leading to reduction in crime rate. (9) We will like to commend Delta State Commissioner of Police Ikechukwu Aduba, CSP James Nwafor Grand Commander SARS Akwuzu Anambra State, SP Rabiu Garuba DPO Fegge Police Station Onitsha, SP Oguejiofor DPO B Division Asaba and DSP Edwin Ogwuni Commander IGP Team C on heinous Crime and terrorism
