Kupwara boy topped JK-CET 2013 Srinagar, Aug 06: Haroon Rashid Bhat, a resident of North Kashmir’s frontier district in Kupwara has topped the Jammu and Kashmir Common Entrance Test (JKCET) scoring 92 percent in the competitive examination conducted by the Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) last month. The State topper in the JK-CET 2013 has scored 207 marks out of 225 in the examination which is a combined entrance exam for admissions to MBBS, BDS, Engineering, BVSc and BSc (Agriculture) courses in the state. While talking to a Srinagar based news gathering agency Global News Service (GNS), Haroon said: “It is due to the blessings of Almighty and the unrelenting support of my family and mentors that I achieved such milestone. The credit also goes to my hard work and self-confidence”. Though he resides in a far flung area where even essential services are hardly available to the common people, Haroon said it is my aim to serve my vicinity and to excel in the medical field, and “above all, to serve my valley.” Haroon’s schooling has come from Government School Kupwara and later on, he moved to Sri Pratab Singh College (SP) Srinagar. Haroon’s father Abdul Rashid while talking to GNS over phone said I was expecting a good rank of him, but “he has proved that dedication and hard work will give you the lead.” “Every parent must act as facilitator not as a dictator, we must give them freedom to select their own choice of subjects in which they want to excel,” Rashid said. When contacted Chairman J&K BOPEE, Prof R D Sharma said: “Almost 24,000-students had applied for the examination out of which nearly 2030 got selected.” It is pertinently to mention here that for the first time in JK-CET, negative marking was introduced. Last month, the BOPEE had to cancel the examination of Chemistry paper and postpone the Biology paper of the CET due to its negligence which led to the leakage of the Biology paper a day ahead of its scheduled exam. The BOPEE took the action after it was reported that invigilating staff at one of the centers in Srinagar on June 22 had distributed Biology paper instead of Chemistry paper. Due to the mess up, thousands of candidates aspiring to get into various professional courses like MBBS, BDS, Engineering, BVSc and BSc (Agriculture) were left in great distress, then BOPEE rescheduled the examination of both the papers on July 27 and 28.
