Kurseong MLA flays govt’s Everest report Kurseong, 8 July: Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma today objected to a speech made by Youth Services Department Minister, Arup Biswas, in the state Assembly where he cited a state government report that said only four persons from West Bengal had scaled Mount Everest since independence and till 19 May 2011. The four persons the report names are Major (retired) Shipra Majumdar, Satyabrata Dam, Basanta Singha Roy and Debasish Biswas. Condemning the report, Mr Sharma questioned as to how the government can say this. “What about Mr Tenzing Norgay the first Everester, Mr Kusang Sherpa and Mr Ngawang Gombu (from Darjeeling Hills), who have successfully climbed the peak several times?” he said from Kolkata. He demanded that the government check the details and rectify the mistake. Mr Sharma also said that the government, through its wrong reports, is only trying to tamper with history that this does not bode well for the Hills.
