L a u r e n c e A ë g e r t e r ‘C a t h e d r a l s Opening: Thursday May 22nd, 5-7 pm Introduction: Kim Knoppers, Curator FOAM, 6 pm * * * In ‘Cathedrals Laurence is showing two new bodies of work: - the Cathedral of Bourges - In her own words: on a spread, a black and white photograph is showing the west side of the Gothic Cathedral of Bourges, in the middle of France. During two hours I’ve photographed every minute, as the dark lines of the shadow from the window frame in my studio hit the reproduction and move over it gradually, until it is swallowed by complete darkness. - the Cathedral of Rouen - A photo series, called “Cathedrals at Sunset”, based on a poster of Claude Monets. An essential aspect of Aëgerter’s artistic concept is her search for strategies to give new meaning to existing (historical) images. She has interacted with videos, paintings, photographs, posters and books by extracting from, or adding elements to the original.
