#LA Last Friday, Council adopted forthwith (I voted no) to allow a measure to be placed on the city primary election ballot on March 3, 2015 that would ask voters whether they would like to change the city charter to move city elections (which currently take place in odd-numbered years) to even-numbered years with state and federal elections. As I’ve expressed numerous times, changing to even-numbered years may increase turnout, but it does not guarantee that voters will vote for local city measures and candidates when they are bombarded with other issues and offices that may capture more of their attention. Voter apathy is no laughing matter, but if you don’t vote March 3 to let us know when you want your city elections to be, the joke will be on this Council body who will probably blame the low turnout on it being an odd-numbered year. It’s funny, and sad, and confusing all at the same time to me. I am requesting via the council to be designated to write the opposing ballot argument. When completed I will publish in a future ENEWS. To all you late Vote-By-Mail (VBM) voters, good news. Tuesday, Council adopted forthwith an ordinance amending the Los Angeles City Election Code to allow VBM ballots postmarked by election day and received within three days afterwards to be counted. Currently VBM ballots must be received by close of polls (8 p.m.) on election day. cityclerk.lacity.org/lacityclerkconnect/index.cfm?fa=ccfi.viewrecord&cfnumber=15-1100-S1
