LAGOS REITERATES COMMITMENT TO THE UPLIFTMENT OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, has reiterated the commitment of this administration to ensuring better life for people living with disabilities in the state. The Governor, who was represented by Mrs. Akiyode, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women and Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), stated this at the distribution ceremony of mobility aids and appliances organised by MTN Foundation. He commended the organization for complementing the efforts of the State Government with the project as part of its corporate social responsibility and urged other organizations to emulate the telecommunication company. According to him, “present administration has been in the forefront of taking care of children with mental and physical disabilities who are often neglected by the society with the hope and belief that if their potentials are developed, they would be able to compete favourably with their peers in the society”. Fashola noted that efforts are being made to ensure that people with special needs are given equal opportunities in the State, adding that this is why the State government had established a Home and Clinic for physically challenged children at Ketu which is equipped with modern facilities. Earlier, Mr.Dennis Okoro ,Director, MTN Foundation, had stated that the programme was designed to give mobility aids and appliances to Nigerians across the 36 states as part of its Disability Support Project , stressing that over 15, 000 people have benefited from the first three phases. He revealed that the 4th Phase which commenced with Lagos State will cover 12 States namely, Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Oyo, Sokoto, Taraba, and Abuja. Okoro expressed his appreciation to the State Government for her efforts towards ameliorating the challenges confronting people living with disabilities. Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Engineer Joseph Annose, expressed his profound gratitude to MTN Foundation for the kind gesture and Lagos State Government for its supports as well as other supportive stakeholders. The items presented to them include wheel chairs, tricycles, Braille Machines, calipers / Leg Braces, Stylus& Mar bugs amongst others.
