LAKE O. RELEASE REPORT FOR 6-6-13 Yesterday, the Army Corp of Engineers and the SFWMD after talking to stakeholders decided to hold back on discharges from S-80 coming out of Lake Okeechobee because there is much more than 250 cfs (cubic square feet) of water coming into the basin from local run off in the C-44 Basin. Please note there is also water pouring into the lagoon/SLR through canals C-23 and C-24 in north county. These dump into the north fork of the SLR; C-44 canal releases dump into the South Fork. In essence, the ACOE is "holding back water" that their "LORS" LAKE SCHEDULE gives them the right, yes right, (for "flood control)" to release up to 1170 cfs under present conditions. The only reason they are not dumping is because so much fresh polluted water is ALREADY entering our lagoon. Salinity is getting much lower animals and plants are stressed. Moral of the story, we have huge problems with runoff even with out the Lake O. discharges. An ariel of the river and ocean now would already show impaired coloration of the lagoon from local runoff... The only negative about the ACOE holding back water is then they have the "right" to give us more to make up what they did not give you at a later time if there is another big rain event and the lake goes up quickly. When Tropical Storm Issac came through last year the lake went up more than 3 feet in a few days. Right now, "do not pray for rain...."
