LAST SATURDAY, QUITE UNEXPECTEDLY, SOMETHING UNBELIEVABLE HAPPENED! After years of frantic searching we managed to track down Mr. Luigi Folco: one of the two eye-witnesses, still alive - along with Vincent Iulianiello - of the Faeta’s massacre in Conca della Campania. The facts . We were attending the ceremony commemorating the 71th anniversary of the nazi massacre in the area called Faeta ( 1943-2014 ) , which, like every year, was held in Cave of Conca della Campania (Caserta) , and about to prepare to go for lunch at Graziella Di Gasparro’s (daughter of Giacomo, one of the victims ), whose sheer and utter determination over the past few years was providential in order not to lose the memory of the massacre , when we were approached by the Municipal Councillor, Luca Maccarone. He tells us that he had just seen Mr. Luigi Folco who, after the ceremony , was holding the attention of a group of people gathered around him, by recounting them his still vivid memories of that tragic morning of 1 November 1943. Prof. Angelone and myself were stunned. We could not believe it: we had had a few meters from us the person we had been chasing for years. Most of the people were about to leave. For a moment we were afraid wed made him run away again, when, providentially, the mayor Alberico Di Salvo intervened to help us out. A couple of phone calls and we were able to track down Mr. Luigi and agreed to meet him straightaway after a few minutes. We met and agreed to the interview that will be made over the next few days. The story of the massacre of Faeta Cave of Conca della Campania is enriched by the memories of yet another eyewitness still alive . My heartfelt thanks to Mr . Folco and his family for welcoming us and for agreeing to release us the interview which, along that of Graziella Di Gasparro and Vincenzo Iulianiello, will provide a fine closure on the events surrounding the massacre, the central story of Terra Bruciata! - Scorched Earth! . We wish to thank wholeheartedly the Mayor and the entire City Council for the warmth and affection shown in every occasion.
