LAW & ORDER – NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY! PART II As told by Michael: The sun had been up for half an hour as Michael eased his patrol car along the narrow tree-lined lane, his presence concealed by a thick roadside hedge. Car windows down, he had been listening for the slightest telltale sign, but except for a few chirping birds and a rooster crowing in the distance, all was tranquil on Old Cabin Lane and the Palmer residence now only fifty yards away. “Arrived,” Michael, whispered into the mike. He methodically undid his seatbelt and quietly opened his car door. Easing out, Michael hunched down as he advanced, his path paralleling the hedge. He was in search of breach in the shrubbery, a porthole to gain a covert view of the residence. Suddenly a male voice screamed, “Honey, honestly I love you!” It came from behind the home, near the barn. Simultaneously, Michael came upon a slight break in the hedge. It was wide enough for him to slip through if need be. In addition, it also offered a clear view of the large back porch, backyard and barn. Presently, a middle-aged man, balding, dressed in rumpled gray suit stood cringing at the corner of the barn, his hands clinging to a gutter downspout. Michael zoomed in on him. No weapon or wound s visible. “Mister Palmer?” Michael’s gaze swept back to the house and then the adjacent driveway. There were two cars parked side by side, a new Volvo sedan and a late model Corvette. The latter was only a few yards from where he knelt. Michael grimaced. The whole setup had an eerily odd feel. Suddenly Michael’s eyes were drawn back to the porch. He zeroed in on the .38 caliber revolver in the right hand of a pajama-clad woman now emerging through the screen door. “Mrs. Palmer?” Before Michael could react, the lady raised the pistol and fired several rounds. There were thuds in the wood-sided barn near where Mr. Palmer stood. Amazingly, he didn’t flinch. Instead, he called out again, “Believe me honey, I still love you!” Michael’s training and experience dictated he draw his own weapon and immediately neutralize the deadly threat; however, he hesitated his intuition now dictating his response. Mrs. Palmer again methodically pulled the trigger. The bullets struck near the first. Mr. Palmer remained steadfast albeit, a pleading look on his face. Meanwhile, Mrs. Palmer calmly popped open the cylinder to the revolver, dumped the empties and began to reload from a box of cartridges she had brought with her. Mr. Palmer threw his hands up in despair, spun on his heels and bolted for the nearby tree line and safety. It was only then that Michael drew his weapon and placed the sights on Mrs. Palmer’s center mass. She was twenty-five yards away. If she raised the gun once more while her husband was in sight, he knew he had no choice.
