LEADERSHIP MATTERS: ALL DEVELOPMENT IS NOT GOOD DEVELOPMENT: Way to go, Mayor De Balsio! In Louisville, as elsewhere, affordable housing FOR ALL INCOME LEVELS is an issue. A family paying 30% or more of its monthly income on rent/mortgage is cost-burdened and unable to cover all its basic necessities. In Louisville Metro, roughly 46% are paying too much rent--with the highest rates in the Census areas of South Dixie (55%), West (54%) and South (51%). But, with the exception of Floyds Fork (16%), the numbers for the remaining Census districts are similarly high (38%-48 %). Yet, our local development landscape is dominated by more housing most cant afford or Section 8--which most do not have access to. As the family median income continues to decrease and expenses (groceries, water/ MSD , electricity, transportation, etc.) increase, we must ask what are our leaders doing to help families live within their means? What are they doing to revive sustainable neighborhoods? How much of the proposed development will facilitate a diverse array small local businesses?
