LEARNING THE WORD (Nov 9, Dedication of Lateran Basilica, Ez 47:1-2, 8-9, 12) On this day in year 324, Pope St. Alexander dedicated a basilica, originally owned by the rich Laterani family, in honor of the Holy Redeemer and designated it as the cathedral of the diocese of Rome. After being restored in the 10th century, it was also dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and to this day is called St. John Lateran. Recognized as Mother and Head of all churches in Rome and throughout the world, it is the oldest church in the world, and is a magnificent and historic symbol of the universal Church, established by Jesus Christ and founded on the apostles. Like the flowing river originating from the temple in Ezekiels vision, giving life to all plants and animals on its path, making the trees bear fruit every month and the leaves beneficial for medicine, the Catholic (universal) Church has continued to give spiritual life down through the centuries to all her children, despite occasional schisms, heresies, and moral decadence. I LEARN to appreciate and feel pride for the rich moral and spiritual heritage I receive through the Catholic Church. I hope to be a living stone in Gods holy temple, and a river of the Churchs life giving grace to humanity.
