LEKKI FREE-ZONE TO CREATE JOBS FOR OVER 20,000 PEOPLE IN LAGOS – OWORU. The Lagos State Government has reiterated that the Lekki Free-Zone project, when completed will create 20,000 jobs as about 8,000 Engineers will be required in the course of operation of Refinery and Fertilizer Plant alone. The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in the State, Mrs. Olusola Oworu stated this during the Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the Third Year, Second Term in Office of Governor Babatunde Fashola. She noted that the Lekki Free-Zone project, covering an area of about 16,500 hectares of land on the tip of the Lekki Peninsula to the South east of the State, remains the flagship of the State Government’s industrial development initiatives that will attract both local and foreign direct investment into the state and will provide an enabling environment for industries to thrive. Oworu also revealed that the state government has paid compensation financially the communities whose land were acquired since 2009 while necessary documentation had been prepared towards the release of the exercised 750 hectares of land earmarked for the resettlement of these communities. According to her, “owning to the vastness of the land area and the attendant huge cost of infrastructure provision therein, the zone was divided into four quadrants for ease of development, adding that “presently State Government is into development partnership with a Chinese Consortium for the development of 3000 hectares in the South West”. “This joint venture has resulted in the provision of 72km of paved roads, 5.5km of stabilized earth roads, 1,92km of drainages, 87 unit of staff quarters, 3 unit of VIP chalets, 22 unit of guest houses, 3 potable water schemes, 150 solar powered streetlights, 3 hectares of green area, 3 standard factories of 2,970m2 and a telecommunications base amongst other infrastructural facilities”, he said.
