LENT - A TIME OF RETREAT The Lenten period generally calls for repentance and penance. During this time we are invited to change our old ways and take a new one which our Lord Jesus Christ is offering us. In doing this, we are expected to make deep and active self examination and stock taking to help us make a turnaround and come out with renewed lives through our Lenten resolutions. All our efforts should be channeled towards knowing Christ better, sharing in His suffering at this period and experiencing the power of His resurrection; thus we can say with St. Paul - that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death (Phil 3:10). What have you given up this Lenten season? This should be the first step after your reflection on this journey of forty days. Try and give up one bad habit in you every day, and I bet you in forty days time, you must have given up every bad habit in you. Then you will be like a new born baby and also resolve within you never to go back into them again, for it is only a dog that goes back to its vomit. This is what the Lord expects from us and not just keeping them by the corner only to go back to them after Lent. May God help us even as we repent of them and resolve never to go back. Lord of mercy and compassion look with pity upon me, Father let me call thee Father especially at this time. Jesus my Lord behold at length the day, when I resolve from sin to turn away: ‘O pardon me Jesus thy mercy I implore, I will never more offend thee, no never more’. ‘I love thee Jesus my love above all thing, I repent with my whole heart of having offended thee, never permit me to separate myself from thee again, grant that I may love you always, and then do with me whatever thy will’. Amen.
