LEST WE FORGET...how Awbury Arboretum (meaning tree museum) came to be during the development of Germantown 100 YEARS AGO...in 1916, they acted decisively...the Cope family turned over the management of a large chunk of the Awbury Estate to the City Parks Association, a private organization working to promote the establishment of small parks throughout the city. The estate was to become a free, public Arboretum, intended for the study of trees and flowers and as a refuge for migratory birds. hiddencityphila.org/2012/05/at-awbury-the-landscape-and-the-ideals-persist/
