LETTER FROM THE NEW ENGLAND ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES: Dear Chairman Rigney Members of the Chelmsford School Committee Superintendent Tiano Principal Caliri The New England School Library Association (NESLA) is surprised and concerned about the recent dismissal of Valerie Diggs, a respected colleague in the New England and national school library communities. Support and comments have flooded social media forums. Valerie has been a role model for best practice for New England school librarians. NESLA held its 2010 Leadership Conference at Chelmsford High School with Valerie as the keynote speaker explaining the Learning Commons concept and how it works at CHS. Over the years, the CHS Learning Commons continued to be a respected model, and we encouraged visitations by fellow colleagues and their administrators to see how the program functioned successfully. Valerie has been our New England regional representative to the American Association of School Librarians board of directors. She is a leader in our field and an advocate for our region. It is disheartening and demoralizing to all of us to see her good work dismissed. We are aware of your budget dilemma. You have a perfect learning opportunity to model critical thinking and problem-solving skills, responsibility and accountability. We hope that you reevaluate your decision and reinstate Valerie Diggs as your Department Coordinator of Libraries. With respect, Irene Kwidzinski President New England School Library Association
