LETTER TO A GENERAL Dear General, Asalaam aleika waramathulahi wabarakatu. This is a season of open letters and thus i know this is one letter out of many which have been and will be written to you sir. I know not if you will get this, but if you do, please read it sir.I write this as one of your most sincere admirers and followers and while you may not like what I am going to say, I implore you to give it some thought anyway. Sir, I wish to ask you not to contest the Presidency next year. You made the right decision wh3n you said the last race would be your last attempt. I certainly believed you when you said you were pressured to rescind your decision. However the people who have promised to purchase your nomination form have no love for you sir. Either that or they are out of touch with reality. Sir, you cannot defeat the incumbent at the polls. This is a cast iron prophecy. Permit me to explain. Politics in nigeria today has a lot to do with perception. Among the non muslim population of our country, you are perceived to be an islamist and a dictator. They say you hate Christians and you lack a democratic spirit. They say you want to islamize nigeria and despite glaring evidence to the contrary, they say you are sympathetic to the boko haram militants. They have based their claims on things you supposedly said or didin the past. Weather you said or did those things sir is irrelevant at this stage. What is relevant is that people who hold such perceptions will never vote for you. There is nothing people like the respected bishop matthew hassan kukah or pastor tunde bakare can say or do to change this. Your foeshave done a first class job of making you look bad. They say you are corrupt. We know this is a laughable lie. I will come however to the issue of your age in a moment. Sir, in a democracy, the people have the right to choose what they want even if it is bad for them. True it is that this government has been a disaster but if the majority wants it to continue in office, thereis nothing you can do. You have a cult following in the north but all the votes in the north of nigeria will notget youthe presidency without a considerable number of votes in the south and east. I would be happy to vote for you but believe me sir, most yoruba people, many of them muslims will not vote for you. As for the east and niger delta...... Sir, Allah has blessed you. You have had a full and rich life. You are almost eighty years old. At this stage, in my opinion, you should be preparing to meet your maker. You should be at home in Daura, seeking Allahs forgiveness and mercy. Remember on the day of judgement, leadership and rulership in this world will not be a thing of joy but one of sorrow as all leadersand rulers will be critically questioned. As a muslim sir, paradise is what you should aim for in your old age not the Presidency of our utterly corrupt state. I state all this with utmost respect sir. You are almost as old as my grandmother and I havent said to you anything I wouldnt say to her sir. I do hope you will consider my words and revert to your original plan not to contest again. It will be the best decision for us all. As you truly love us, please do this. I retain my faith in your integrity. Masalaam.
