LETTERKENNY GOLF CLUB RESULTS/NEWS! Rounding off a busy festive schedule at Letterkenny Golf Club by winning the last pre-Christmas competition on Saturday 20th was someone whom I believe to be one of the most dedicated members to competition entries, club stalwart and single figure handicapper Kevin Kiely [8]. If you were to assume that a member played two home competitions per week over forty-eight weeks, thats almost one hundred competitions. Considering that during the summer months we had up to four competitions per week, [you do the maths] , then I would like to personally congratulate Kevin on his dedication and contribution to the success of club competitions. Once again, combining solid golf with shrewd course management, Kevin, on a wind-blown, showery day, covered the outward nine in 39 shots, three over par gross 19pts. With a birdie at eleven to keep him on track, Kevin finished on 79 gross for a winning stableford score of 37pts, defining his intent for the new season ahead. GERARD TAKES THE REIGNS It was with great delight and appreciation that the club inducted its 2015 club Captain, Gerard Duffy. I am looking forward to my role as Club Captain for 2015 and i hope to follow in such auspicious footsteps as previous captains and retain the highest standard of club stewardship throughout my forthcoming year, for which I am deeply honoured, and look forward to working with the 2015 mens, ladies and parent committees to ensure that that high standard is retained Congratulations to Gerard and we can be assured that the club remains in good hands. ANNE MAKES HISTORY AT BARNHILL! Once again, Letterkenny Golf Club have made an historical entry into their history books, having elected a lady member to be their 2015 club President, and it was with the greatest of joy and pleasure that the nominee, club stalwart Anne Condon, accepted. My most prestigious honour within the club to date was my election to Lady Captain in 2011. Letterkenny Golf Club has played a large part in my familys lives, and will do for a long time yet. The friends that we have made through golf and the club, has been upmost to our settling into life in Letterkenny, and it is here that we now consider to be our forever home. The club Presidency is a great honour for me and I feel privileged to be able to accept. Annes appointment as Letterkennys 24th President will ensure that the prestige and high standard of professionalism that has become synonymous with Letterkenny Golf Club will remain in safe hands during 2015. HAVE YOU SIGNED UP? SAD PASSING OF FORMER CAPTAIN OF LETTERKENNY GOLF CLUB HUGH DUFFY. It was with huge regret that the Captain, Lady Captain, President, Committees and members of Letterkenny Golf Club had learned of the sudden death of former club Captain Hugh Duffy, 3, College Row, Letterkenny. Mr. Duffy passed away suddenly on Monday last in Blackrock Clinic, Dublin. Apart from being a well known and very popular member of the local community, having been a former member of the teaching staff at St. Eunans College, Letterkenny, Hugh was the oldest surviving male Captain of Letterkenny Golf Club. During his vice captaincy and full captains role in 1966 & 1967, Hugh was instrumental in the purchase of the land at Barnhill and the development of the golf club as it is now known. During that period of re-location from Crievesmith,[the old course], Hughs foresight, energy and dedication to conserving the local wildlife within the golf course area is still there today to be seen by all. Indeed, there is an especially rare species of tree, on the pathway from the 18th green to the clubhouse, that Hugh took great pride in saving and which he often visited to make sure that it was still alive and standing. Hugh was renowned by more senior club members as being the Captain who presided over the final golf competition at Crievesmith and the first ever competition at Barnhill! Having always been proud of his Captaincy and association with Letterkenny Golf Club, Hugh remained a house member of the club and attended whatever past-captains re-unions there were and could always be relied on for a few well spoken words of wisdom and anecdotes to regale those present. Mr. Duffy was actively involved in Meals on Wheels, was a member of the Board of Management of St. Bernadettes School, took great interest in the ongoing development of Letterkenny Town and, indeed, won numerous prizes for best kept garden in the tidy towns competitions. Sincere condolences from all members of Letterkenny Golf Club to his wife Elaine, family and relatives. Hughs funeral Mass was held in St. Eunans Cathedral on St. Stephens Day, Friday 26th December with burial afterwards at Conwall Cemetary. R.I.P. An appreciation night from Browns on the Green for all members, patrons and general customers of Leterkenny Golf Club will be held in the bar on Friday 2nd January . Complimentary food, drink and music will be on hand and all are welcome to join in the ceol, bia agus craic.
