LFA, LBA Need to Search for Players (Monrovia October 4, 2013) A Liberian journalist is calling on authorities of the Liberia Football Association and the Liberia Basketball Association to begin the search for athletes born of Liberian parents that are actively plying their trades in other competitions around the world to come home and contribute to their country’s national teams. Numennie Williams, former president of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) believes if authorities of sport federations could search and persuade athletes born to Liberian parents and playing actively, but living abroad to come and form part of the various national teams, the country will shine again. He stated that Liberia has lost some athletes to other countries and may lose some soon, if steps are not taken to encourage and persuade them to come home and fly their national colors. He said the exercise will enable Liberia have better national teams which will be a force to reckon with in Africa and the world. Williams wants the various federations and associations to set up committees or department for such purpose. The former SWAL boss believes the move will help motivate and challenge local athletes to improve as there would be competition. He went on to name some players Liberia have lost to other counties, to include basketballer Patrick Flomo to Germany, footballer Samuel Wowah to Sweden and may soon lose basketballer Othello Hunter of Serie A basketball team Montepaschi and Paelay Pele of French basketball club Vichy to America and footballer Darlington Nagbe and others. He said as a sports journalist, he will be willing to assist any federation interested in taking up such task.
