LG flags off Andaman Marathon-2013 Never give-up spirit of the people of the Islands lauded Port Blair, Nov 24: Despite rain playing the spoiler, over 600 runners belonging to different age groups turned out to participate in the ‘Andaman Marathon-2013’. These sports enthusiasts were not only from the Islands but from different parts of the country, and few from African countries as well. The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A.K. Singh was the chief guest and flagged off the marathon race in the morning from the historic Cellular Jail. He also participated and ran for some distance. Later, the prize distribution ceremony was held at Netaji Stadium, where the Lt Governor distributed the prizes to the winners in the different categories. The main attraction of the marathon race was the presence of Bollywood actor Rahul Bose and top model Lisa Haydon, who were there to inspire the runners and sports enthusiasts. Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor complimented the organisers for successfully hosting the event. He lauded the spirit of the people of the Islands and sports enthusiasts who, despite rain since early morning, have participated in large numbers. “The large turnout of the people to participate in the marathon race itself speaks about the spirit of the people of our Islands’, he said. Referring to rumours that mainland candidates will take away the jobs of teachers, being recruited by the Education Department currently, the Lt. Governor urged the teachers and students to have confidence in him and reassured them that their interests would be protected and a reasonable solution arrived at which will stand legal after administrative scrutiny. He further appealed to the youth not to be misguided by rumours. He said the whole procedure would be fair and transparent. Praising Bollywood actor Rahul Bose, for his association with the marathon, the Lt Governor described him as the perfect person to become the brand ambassador of the game. “His selfless service for the people of the Islands speaks of his love and affection for the Islands”, he said. In his brief address, Shri Rahul Bose complimented the spirit of the people of the Islands, who had participated in the marathon despite heavy downpour since morning. He also expressed his love for the Islands and added that he has been associated with the Islands since 2004 tsunami. “My love for the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is enormous and I will continue to visit these Islands to take part in such events”, he said and added that “I will come whenever you call me and will come even if you don’t”. Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others, Shri Mohd. Jadwet, Chairman, Organising Committee (Andaman Marathon) said that despite a wet Sunday, people in large numbers participated in the marathon thus making it a grand success. He informed that in addition to participants from the Islands, sportspersons from Kenya, Ethiopia and Nigeria and mainland India have participated in the event. The prize distribution ceremony ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Shri G. Bhaskar, President, ACCI, Port Blair, who also thanked the main sponsors Make My Trip.Com and SBI. The Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Shri B.P. Ray, Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, Chairperson (PBMC), Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad (SA), Chairperson (SSWB), senior officers of the Administration and large number of sports enthusiasts were present on the occasion. Despite the rain it turned out to be a memorable Sunday.
