LGD FAMILY TIME: What I love about rearing dogs in a pack the way - TopicsExpress

LGD FAMILY TIME: What I love about rearing dogs in a pack the way I do - which is basically giving them the space, place, and love and support to be who they are - is the deep family ties they develop. Here are Pyrenean Mastiffs proud Papa Troy Farma Stekot playing with his beloved Mama Sally Farma Stekot, and their two boys Esteban and Errol from their E Litter (two of the other E pups you can see off in the background - Estrella and Estafany - Electra was hanging out in the barn with Daphne when we took this). I believe that dogs who are content and happy, guard better and provide better protection. You cant get much happier than this. To me, good LGDs dont just guard livestock. They stake out your place and you as well, and make it all part of their pack. I think too many people limit what LGDs can do. They want it all in a tiny box. I dont box my dogs in. I let them be who they are. I support good actions and correct bad ones. I stay out of their way and let them do their thing. Because I run a huge pack, there is a familial environment here of safety and structure that pups grow up in confident, bold and inquisitive. Its why Im always butting heads with those out there who falsely claim if you pet, handle or otherwise give an LGD any kind of attention or affection, you will ruin its guarding abilities. I think I have enough successful litters working out there now to dash that falsehood to pieces. It is inhumane to the dog, and not true. Dogs are pack creatures. They were never meant to live and work alone, or be shut off from others. Run your LGDs in pairs or threes or more. Love your LGDs and be kind and supportive to them, and you will see that returned 1,000s times.
