LIKE AND SHARE PLEASE WHY I ACCEPTED TO BECOME ONE OF THE AMBASSADORS TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE RIJEKA TO BECOME CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE 2020 First of all, because of its people. They are warm and welcoming and belong to the most open minded people in Croatia. Their will, potential and creativity will surprise all of us. I have been travelling a lot and in Rijeka I notice a strong energy for things to happen. And this not just within the youngest generation... Rijecani are croatian and italian in their souls and their city is a testimony of our tremendous European history. There are reminders of celtic and roman civilizations. Its historical buildings show Austrian, Hungarian, Italian and French influences. The city is the 3rd city of Croatia. Its port was one of the most important ports in Europe. Its theatre one the largest one. Its sea, its mountains, the overwhelming nature surrounding the city are just inspiring. The surrounding towns, villages like e.g. Opatija, Lovran, Bakar, the islands of Krk and Rab are exquisite places to take a breath and remind us of our history. Moreover : Rijeka is close to cities like Zagreb, Pula, but also to Triëste and Venice in Italy. Its Industrial past, belongs to our European heritage and now makes for a lot of buildings which are just screaming to find a new destination and which are ideal for cultural purposes. Unlike some other European cities, Rijeka, literally, still has place for new opportunities Rijeka has a National Theatre, which harbours a croation and an italian spreaking company, the national opera and ballet and an orchestra. A lot of smaller organizations create activities which offer more possilities for modern and even avangarde artists. And ofcourse, there are its museums and several festivals in and around the citty. Its university and Academy for the Arts; deliver new generations of artists,intellectuals and scientists which are open for international collaborations. All this, and the fact that because of its history Rijeka Is Europe, makes it the best candidate for Cultural capital of Europe 2020 ....
