LIKES History News: January 17, 1837 - The Treaty of Doaksville was signed with the Choctaw and Chickasaw people. This treaty was supposed to ensure co-existence of the two related tribes within the Oklahoma Territory. At the same time it effectively shut the door of their homelands. The Chickasaw Tribe eventually relocated to land already occupied by the Choctaw people in Oklahoma. A small band of Choctaw Indians remained in Mississippi, but the vast majorities of other Mississippi Native Americans either assimilated into the local settler communities or were removed to Oklahoma Territory. digital.library.okstate.edu/kappler/Vol2/treaties/Chi0486.htm
