LISTENINIG TO PEOPLE CONVERSING IN SOUTH INDIAN LANGUAGES CAN BE AN EXPERIENCE OF ITS KIND TO US NORTH INDIANS; they say language is no bar if two people want to communicate....well it might hold good for others but not for me ...listening to those alien sounding languages that too with so much change in modulations and tones from all quarters can be quite confusing for a hindi speaking person...It bewilders and baffles him completely and leaves him totally awe struck...Not a word can be understood and you stand there gaping like a fool ..trying hard to decipher a word or two...but no success..and to ur ears they come as jarring cacophonous sounds...and the accent ...u wonder ..how the hell do they get it...?you may become suspicious of their motives as if they are conspiring against you and they carry on without giving a damn to you ...you stand there like a mute wall observing them ...as though you are invisible ...you also get fascinated as all the words sound just the same to you ...I guess that holds true for all languages of the world ...but it can be quite a mind boggling experience when they are in a group chatting and conversing ...ALL YOU CAN DO IS TO LISTEN WITHOUT COMPREHENSION AND STARE WITHOUT BATTING AN EYELID.... ALL THAT ...FOR A TRIP DOWN SOUTH ...NOT THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT COURTEOUS OR FRIENDLY ...BUT LANGUAGE DOES POSE A BARRIER IF THEY DO NOT KNOW HINDI OR ENGLISH COMMENT OR LIKE IF YOU AGREE.... -NAUTANKI
