Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid is not quite Jose Mourinho’s Madrid. Primarily, they are not defensively as solid. They managed to squeeze past an injury ravaged Borussia Dortmund side by the odd goal in the past round. On the other hand, Bayern, despite recording the largest aggregate victory amongst the semifinalists, was not lauded in the manner in which Madrid was. It seemed as if Bayern had managed to hide their frailties yet again. In truth, Bayern had not been at their best against United and seemed to be playing “reactive football”. In both legs, they responded after going behind. In the second leg, their response revealed what Bayern, at full pace, can do. They scored three easily past United; Wayne Rooney’s miss at the other end must be taken into account nonetheless. They achieved the victory more importantly without Bastian Schweinsteiger to aid them. When the Bavarians have needed to win, they have done so. While league defeats to Dortmund and Augsburg have raised plenty of questions, one cannot forget Die Roten have already won the Bundesliga. In the DFB Pokal, they needed to beat Kaiserslautern in the semi finals and did so, 5-1. However, can Bayern keep on switching to a different gear during important games? Real Madrid meanwhile made an important point as they beat Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey Final. They did so without Cristiano Ronaldo. At the end, the magic of the Welshman, Gareth Bale, proved enough to win them the title. Bayern has been defensively slightly frail compared to last season without the protection of two defensive midfielders. David Alaba will have plenty on his mind thanks to Bale. On the other wing, Lahm is surely going to feature against Ronaldo ahead of the more temperamental Rafinha. Alvaro Arbeloa and Jese are out for Madrid. Sami Khedira is working his way back to fitness; in his absence however, Angel di Maria has shone in that position. Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt but has been training to be ready in time for this clash. Marcelo is a doubt as well; his and Ronaldo’s involvements will be down to late fitness tests. Schweinsteiger returns from suspension for Bayern for this one. He has scored many important goals for the club in recent weeks. Tom Starke, Thiago Alcantara and Xherdan Shaqiri are out for Bayern. Daniel Van Buyten was absent from Bayern’s last match due to personal reasons; he might be available for this match. Both Manuel Neuer and David Alaba were absent for Bayern’s trip to Braunschweig but should return for this one. Thomas Müller, Javier Martinez and youngster Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are all doubtful for Bayern. The previous clash between these two sides at the Bernabeu ended in a 2-1 win for Real. Bayern dominated possession and, as the tie was level on aggregate after 120 minutes of action in Madrid, the match went to penalties and Bayern won.
