Osher Lifelong Learning Institute By Betty Maxwell The Village offers its residents a whole array of activities to choose among, both on and off the premises. But there is an outside program that is attracting residents as well. This is WVU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, fondly known as OLLI. Open to any individual age 50 and over with a curious mind, the program offers literally dozens of classes on the arts, literature, science, politics, history, medicine, economics, as well as how-to classes like digital photography, computer use, fly fishing and caving! Most classes meet for two hours once a week for a six-week term. There are no admission qualifications, no exams, no grades, even no homework except some suggested optional reading. Many of the volunteer instructors are current or retired West Virginia University professors and all are passionately interested and knowledgeable about their subjects. Most classes are held in OLLI’s facility in the old Mountaineer Mall. For a current fee of $85 per year, members may enroll in all of the classes they want, participate in a number of social activities and field trips, and enjoy the opportunity learning for the fun of it while making new friends at the same time.
