LOBATSE TO HOST MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE Lobatse, which has turned into a home of sports events, will host the first Mountain Bike Challenge on October 17. The extravaganza, which also includes a family fun day and after party, is expected to attract 200 cyclists from Botswana and beyond. The challenge is sponsored by Lobatse Town Council and Spin City Events while the timing and registration are handled by renowned cycling event gurus Ultimate Cycle Base. Addressing a press conference in Gaborone on October 8, the event organiser, Joseph Khengere of Spin City Events said they had an allegiance to Lobatse and they chose to go with the scenic town. “Lobatse is a mountainous town and it is the perfect terrain for such events,” he said. He said their intention is to set standard highs and to bring excitement and family fellowship hence the family fun day and after party. Khengere said all participants must be ready as road markings have already been done. He noted that the terrain will vary from long gravel straights, twists and turns, rocks as well as uphills. “There will be at least four road crossings where people can watch the action,” he said. For her part, the public relations officer of Lobatse Town Council, Poloka Kabomo said the purpose of organising the event is to negate the perception that Lobatse has become a ghost town. She said the race would improve the image of Lobatse as a forgotten town. “This is an opportunity to maximise and expose Lobatse to outside people and attract investors. The event will also get big business in Lobatse to satisfy their social responsibility through sponsorship and networking,” she said. She noted that the event would benefit small businesses in Lobatse through food stalls. The event kicks off at 8am and activities include a 5km kid’s fun ride which will take place in the park and a 20km ride for juniors, 40km for intermediates and 60km for professionals. Winners in each category will get medals and certificates. The family fun day part will include quad bikes, play stations, face painting, treasure hunting and jumping castles. There will be sizzling braais, barbeques and boerwores for everyone. Lobatse’s finest DJ’s will set the after party scene ablaze till midnight. The challenge is sponsored by KBL, Masterprint and Sugar Industries and part of the proceeds will be donated to a children’s home in Lobatse.
