LOCAL COMMUNITY SERGEANT RECOGNISED IN AWARDS CEREMONY, Wednesday, October 22, 2014 Police Scotland has recognised the contribution and achievements of its women officers and staff at the Scottish Women’s Development Forum (SWDF) Awards. Sergeant Sandra Williams from Tayside Division is the winner of this years’ Community Service category. The award was given to her in recognition of her outstanding service to the communities of Angus and Perth and Kinross over the last 30 years. Praised for being at the heart of her community both in a private and professional capacity, Sergeant Williams amongst her varied roles, regularly provides the vital link between the local community and large scale events such as T in the Park and the Ryder Cup. Her commitment to design and implement initiatives to provide long term and sustainable solutions to community issues over the years is greatly appreciated by the communities she serves. Sergeant Williams is always supportive of her colleagues, an inspiration and a role model and serves her community with real passion. A third of her service has been dedicated to specialist community roles, and for the last four years Sergeant Williams has been Community Sergeant for the Kinross, Strathearn and Strathallan, which takes in the main towns of Kinross, Auchterarder and Crieff. The SWDF Awards recognise the contribution that women officers and staff make to Police Scotland and to their communities. Women officers and staff remain under-represented within Police Scotland. SWDF works within Police Scotland to address this issue and to increase the representation of women officers and staff in all roles at all levels. This year’s awards ceremony took place on Tuesday (21st Oct). Awards were made in eight categories: Police Constable of the Year, Police Staff Member of the Year, Special Constable of the Year, Leadership, Community Service, Mentoring and Excellence in Performance. The final Special Recognition Award is made to anyone who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of women in policing. Presenting the awards, Chief Constable Sir Stephen House, said: “My congratulations to all of the officers and staff recognised in today’s awards. Today’s winners demonstrate the hard work and dedication of Police Scotland’s women officers and staff, and the breadth of roles they undertake, whether it is in serving their local communities, tackling domestic abuse or carrying out specialist roles. “Police Scotland is committed to developing and promoting its women officers and staff to ensure that all officers reach their full potential. We will continue to work closely with the SWDF to achieve this.” Vic Emery, Chair of the Scottish Police Authority, said: “The SWDF awards are a unique opportunity to celebrate the important influence that female officers and staff have within Police Scotland. In the ten years since the SWDF was founded, the organisation has played a valuable role in raising awareness of gender equality within Scottish policing and we at the SPA appreciate the input and support. Today’s awards are a great example of that and I would like to congratulate all the winners for consistently demonstrating excellence in their careers and for being outstanding role models to others in policing.” SWDF Chair, Chief Inspector Suzie Mertes, said: The Scottish Womens Development Forum (SWDF) Awards provide us with the opportunity to recognise the contributions and achievements of female police officers, staff and special constables within Police Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority (SPA). “It is important that we celebrate the exceptional work being done by our staff within Police Scotland and the SPA, not only to recognise the commitment of our colleagues, but also to highlight and promote the excellent work and initiatives being undertaken around the country. “As Chair of the SWDF I was incredibly impressed by all the nominations. The judges commented on what a tough decision it was for them based on the exceptionally high standard so winning is an achievement these committed, enthusiastic and deserving staff members should be extremely proud of. “Congratulations to all our winners. We would also like to thank everyone who took the time to nominate a colleague and our judges for taking the time to carefully consider each application. Finally we would also like to thank the Police Scotland Executive and the SPA Board for their continued support of the SWDF.
