LONG LIFE Who does not want long life? Anyone who hates long life must be abnormal! In fact, one of the greatest and most heart-motivated blessings that we pronounce on anyone who has been extremely good to us or done something significant to others is:”May you live long on earth!” None of us would want to die so soon without finishing school (graduating), working and earning big money to our satisfaction, acquiring the properties and riches of our dreams, attaining the heights and positions in society that we have desired all along, marrying, having our babies born, enjoying all the blessings of family life, seeing our children grow and prosper, being healthy all the time, and dying only when we have fully enjoyed life and served God plus society to our satisfaction. Simply stated, all of us want to fulfill our destiny on earth. There are, however, are some conditions attached to the longevity of years and being blessed by God with a satisfying long life. Some of these are: 1) Psalm 91:16 --- God plans (and promises) to satisfy us with long life, and demonstrate His rescuing powers to us on a daily basis by delivering us from all dangers along the road of our long life, provided we constantly “dwell in His secret place” and regard Him as “the Most High” (Psalm 91:1). God also requires us to love (obey) Him and pray to him or call upon Him always (as a sign of trust, faith, and dependence) ---Psalm 91: 14, 15. 2) 1 Kings 3:14 --- Just as God told King Solomon, if you live in careful obedience (fear God by obeying His word), then He promises to lengthen your days. Remember that Solomon had prayed for wisdom, and God was very pleased with His request, so he blessed Solomon with riches, honor, and defeat of his enemies that he had not cried for. But God would not give Solomon many years to live (more than average) IF he disobeyed, or thought that he could just pray and get long life through prayers alone. Let us carefully note that as we pray for protection, deliverance, healing, and long life of happiness, God expects us to live obedience and holiness. This includes long life to complete whatever we are doing now. If you want your marriage, parenting, projects, work, investments, efforts overseas or in another locality where you are toiling to accomplish things, what you are trying to establish (as a boss, owner of a property or company, educationist, researcher, inventor, policy maker, writer, musician, pastor, minister, father, mother, guardian, or leader etc.), and all other legacies to have lasting value even when you have departed to eternity, then fulfill your part of the agreement with personal humility for more of God’s grace to be poured into your life, and obedience to God as He requires from you. 3) Proverbs 3:1-2 --- If you “remember God’s laws (read, think, and meditate on scriptures constantly), and your heart keeps God’s commandments (allowing God’s word to get deeper into your soul and influencing all of your emotions and desires)”, then your own obedience will draw long life from God into your original short human lifespan on earth. This will happen in order for you to spend more time obeying, serving God, winning souls, strengthening Believers, doing good things to many people, and glorifying God down here. 4) Proverbs 3:13, 16 ---Wisdom that you find (intentionally search for, learn, and apply) will also “lengthen your days”, and provide you with riches of all kinds (apart from money and possessions --- ex. academic, spiritual, and social riches) and give you honor among men and in God’s sight. Wisdom means application of knowledge (information you have acquired) for daily living; seeing things the way God sees them; learning how to solve problems; application of truth to experience. Proverbs 3:22 also tells us that wisdom is “a tree of life”. A tree is alive, grows to maturity, is fresh, produces fruit, is very useful, can be multiplied, is stable, patiently and obediently remains at one spot designed for it, can be trusted to produce the same results all the time, uses what it is provided with without grumbling and fretting or being disobedient and greedy; and lives for a long time. This will be true of you IF only you get true wisdom. And, remember: “The FEAR OF GOD (deep respect for God, constant dependence on Him, faith in His promises, and obedience to His word) is THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM” (Proverbs 9:10).
