LOST ORIGINS: A FAMOUS XMAS TUNE I find it fascinating how many times I have discovered by accident an artifact which suggests a lost origin of some aspect of modern culture. In this case, a traditional Welsh song called Megans Granddaughter, which contains an exact replica of a melody segment of the modern tune We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I wouldnt be surprised if one descends from the other (its mathematically too much of a coincidence for it NOT to), and I suspect the traditional Welsh tune (which I just discovered) is older, and thus the probable origin. Why do we forget so readily where our traditions come from? How does it harm us to disconnect from our indigenous roots? Is this primarily an American phenomenon? I, for one, would rather connect with cultural origins, for history is a sort of foundation. With more foundation, we would be less vulnerable to cultural manipulations by the corporatocracy (who otherwise manipulates culture for profit and power), would we not? thesession.org/tunes/6412/recordings
