LOVE, FAITH AND SACRIFICE Kathlyn Q. Barrozo Class of 1991, University of Santo Tomas B.S. Medical Technology I was putting the finishing touches to an assignment yesterday when it suddenly dawned on me what the work was about. There’s this attraction somewhere in the US that gives tourists the experience of the Holy Land. It is a religious theme park with replicas of Jerusalem and the specific places that had shaped Jesus into the Man-Savior that He became. The research brought me to the inside of that theme park. It is a unique attraction in itself. Fortunate are those who have been able to pay it a visit. A day in the park certainly comes close to making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land itself. Such a journey to the Holy Land entails sacrifice. I envy those whose version of the Holy Bible is the Koran. A pilgrimage to Mecca seems to be the ultimate journey they can ever make in their lifetime. Such a journey entails sacrifice, yet they willingly make the sacrifice. Faith entails sacrifice. We cannot declare that we act on faith alone if we do not at least make a sacrifice. This sacrifice involves many elements. Often, we need to prove that we believe in what our children are capable of. I guess there just comes a time when love for our children becomes secondary to having faith in them. That faith makes us firmer in our resolutions for our children. Thus, we work hard and remain unwavering in our commitment to support them till they can make it on their own. We may often face setbacks along the way, but these are trials that the greatest of sacrifices will eventually prevail over. We choose to plod on despite the challenges there are to raising our children. We love them and nurture them through all the trials and difficulties. We give them the benefit of the doubt even when others around us and them say they are a hopeless case. We have faith in them, so we sacrifice whatever and however we can to help them chart their course. I would like to be able to visit the theme park I described earlier. Maybe someday, I will be able to. It would be really nice since there’s probably no hope for me to visit the real Holy Land. I would like to witness for myself how the real thing probably succeeded in creating the culture that Jesus grew up in. Oh, I know very well that none of my children can ever hold a candle to the Great One. However, it would be interesting to reflect on just how a strong faith as Jesus had in His Father’s Word had made Him go through everything that He did. After all, He made the ultimate sacrifice. Questions for discussion: 1. What to you is the ultimate sacrifice? 2. Think about the sacrifices you have personally had to make. Talk about the biggest ones you have made. 3. How can sacrifice provide you with satisfaction? Be as specific as you need to be. 4. When you love deeply, should you be prepared for sacrifice? Why or why not? 5. What are you willing to give up or let go of in the name of love? Elaborate on your answer. "SHARE LOVE SHARE KNOWLEDGE" iotsonline .
