LOVE my home town, I am a proud Brantford gal, born and raised and have lived here for most of my 47 years. For the most part, being from Brantford has been a downright positive experience. I have so much to be thankful for in being from Brantford, that I could write a tell-all book that would just be chalked full of fond home town memories. I am a HUGE Gretzky fan, always have been, always will be. Wayne after all gave us Walter….and for THAT alone, we should be thankful. I’ve been in the public eye for almost 20 years and as a result of that, there’s always resentment that comes from being a so called “Do Gooder” or someone who “Hogs the limelight” or gets too much publicity for their chosen entertainment events and festivals and there’s always someone out there trying to rain on your parade when you do something nice or achieve something be it a medal or an award or getting WELL after being sick. Taking ALL of that in to account; I have to admit that I’m not surprised to find out that some numbskull out there decided that instead of honouring someone from Brantford who has achieved sports greatness, that they should tarnish the greatness with a can of paint. “Take THAT”. The Gretzky family did NOT ask to be put into the spotlight; they didn’t seek it and have done an admirable job of maintaining dignity and decorum while the haters and the bashers have rose to the occasion. “Let’s KNOCK the guy off his pedestal.” Their son “shot” to superstardom for the mere fact that he could maneuver a puck like nobody else in the history of the game. He is a true gentleman on and off the ice; much like his parents and that is echoed in the thousands of people who have had the pleasure of being in their company. Being in the public eye is NOT easy. You open yourself up for constant ridicule and no matter how many fans you may accumulate, there’s always growing negativity and bizarre accusations that come with the territory. MANY of my friends who are also in the public eye experience this same phenomenon, no sense naming who they are; they are as obvious as their events and community ambassadorship. Some of us have grown immune to it; some of us have just grown tired of it while sadly, others just cave to the criticism and STOP doing what we have come to love doing. THAT is a crime. The can of paint used to mar the statue is a symbol that we can no longer tolerate. It’s time to stand up to the folks that knock us down. Brantford is a GREAT place to be. It’s the best blooming city in the world and it’s got the best people within her limits. It’s time we start embracing what is GREAT about this wonderful town and turn deaf ears to those that want to continually knock it down and all of those that are out there enhancing it. Team Brantford…He Shoots, He Scores…
