La Calavera de la Catrina in Mexican popular culture, is a humorous representation of the skeleton of a lady of high society. It is one of the most popular festival of the Day of the Dead in Mexico. The word catrina is the feminine variant of the word Catrin, which means Dandy in Spanish. The character is characterized as a female skeleton wearing a hat, as distinctive of high societies of the early twentieth century and has a function to remind everyone that the social differences mean nothing in the face of death.
