La Jolla Shores Time: am Temp: toasty 67 degrees Surf: multiple sets – 1’- 3’ not much power Gearing up I heard rumors of a new resident sighting…a Finescale Triggerfish. I dropped near the canyon edge and from the surface, I could see the bottom. Within a few minutes, I spotted the quirky fish, acting a bit spaztic with a wide-eyed look. Wow, another cool critter for the LJS and that’s just exciting. As Jovan mentioned in his report, the poor fish was trying to find an unoccupied hole, only to be chased away by either a resident Rockfish or Sheephead. It’s a bit shy, and very quick to bolt. I think it feels totally out of place. I finally meandered over to the Patch but only saw big bait balls and a very cool Yellowtail that buzzed me. I didn’t have time to film it, but on my return, I came upon the Triggerfish again, then more schools of fish, and I saw the Yellowtail lurking, circling and stalking them, so I stalked it. And, I was finally able to get close enough to film it, although briefly. That’s a serious fish. Oh ya, and some of the other usual critters were out as well. Another great dive. vimeo: https://vimeo/109348233 jackie
