Labor Day. It was not started as a reason for back-to-school - TopicsExpress

Labor Day. It was not started as a reason for back-to-school sales. It was started to recognize American labor, the toils of the working class. PortSide friend Jim Clark, who works on tug when not running an art gallery he founded, posted this song and slide show tribute to the labor which built the British railroads. youtube/watch?v=Fh0F41AvO_Q That video could also serve as a tribute to similar work which built the Erie Canal, the water highway which changed the economy of this city, state, and what is now called the mid-west. It also changed the face of Red Hook, Brooklyn where granaries, warehouses and man-made harbors were erected to receive the cargoes floating here from deep inland. That canal provided the name of Red Hook’s own Erie Basin, the man-made cove where many canal barges unloaded and/or wintered over. Erie Basin is still a tug and barge port today, in addition to being the home of an IKEA store. Here’s a short video on the building of the Erie Canal history/shows/america-the-story-of-us/videos/building-the-erie-canal#
