Labor Day in the US was begun in the 1930s, by the faction of the Union Movement which sought to distance American Unions from Communism and Socialism...and from the European traditions which held these values dear. May Day (May 1st) an old pagan holiday heralding the spring was always the European Peoples Day. It had been adopted as International Workers Day in the Victorian era. So Labor Day was settled upon, as being far from the traditions that Marx and Engels had espoused and their followers celebrated. The USSR adopted May 1st as its national day and in the brewing Cold War atmosphere and the clash of ideologies which prompted it, there is no way you can see Labor Day as a Socialist or Communist tradition......rather their very American capitalist consumer driven ethos antithesis.
