Labor Day – we are standing on the shoulders of giants – When we post on Facebook all the accomplishments of Labor that is very good. However understand that for the past 40 plus year’s labor has had few victories – they belong to the Brothers & Sisters from many decades ago and we have coasted on them. If on this Labor Day and celebration of labor accomplishments, we would be hard pressed to find a better example for us all than Brother Les Orear. Les used to say - “A union’s meaning lies in its capacity to turn around personal frustration beyond the individual to a larger commitment to the collective good”. Another way he used to tell me was – if you are worried about your check and/or job be it from an employer or union politics, and not stand up for what is right – then you will lose your career.
