Ladies - from Coach Colleen: About this heat and humidity - recent research in the field of exercise physiology has found that older women have more trouble dissipating heat from their bodies than younger women or men. Also, runners who have recently moved to the humid mid-south from drier regions of the country will have more trouble in our Memphis humidity than those of us who have lived here for awhile. Our bodies try to keep cool by sweating, but that can cause problems for some women as well, especially IF they are prone to sweat out more electrolytes than normal. I have been running less than a year, and with this being my first experience with summer running, Im learning something new every time I hit the roads. One thing Im learning - besides the fact that hot, humid conditions slow me down - is that I need to take a salt tablet before every hot, humid run. Even 80 degree runs cause me to sweat out enough electrolytes to cramp. if the humidity is over 40%. Of course, Im an older woman (almost 59), and putting on alot of miles for someone who is still basically a beginner. Just something to be aware of, as it will be hot and humid this afternoon at training...
