AUDI A9 CONCEPT CAR by Ronan OBrien Do not adjust your screen, there is nothing wrong with your computer: you are simply looking directly into the very future of automotive design. Meet the Audi A9 Concept Car, a vehicle bearing more in common with Doc’s DeLorean, driven around the set of Back To The Future, than with the Barbour-green Volvo you rode in on the school run. This futuristic four-wheeler, taken from dream to desktop by Spanish car designing visionary Daniel Garcia, is a theoretical four-door sports coupe with a difference. And the difference? It can repair itself. And change its colour, opacity and – yep – visibility. Conceptually built using self-regenerating nanotechnology material (which hasn’t yet been discovered), the car would also be fitted with an electronic painting system, through which its driver could change the vehicle’s colour simply by pressing a button. Blue car to match your navy jeans? Done. In the mood for red? Why not. A sleek powerhouse comprising combustion engine and four in-wheel electric motors, Garcia says inspiration came from the exquisite design displayed in architect Santiago Calatrava’s La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias, the hyper-modern waterfront cultural complex located in Garcia’s hometown of Valencia. Indeed, this automobile is the sort of alien creature one might imagine bursting out of one of the complex’s hatches, skidding across the water, and taking off into the Spanish skies. Watch this space.
