Laikas are great in many ways but one thing are they lousy at: heat. Here my (now old) male during a bear hunt. It was 20-25 degrees. We messed up, both me and my friend was close to getting a shot at the bear, but it outsmarted us and went inte neighbour terrain. Wes sat at the border many hours listening to the dog barking at the bear who now stood still for the rest of the day. After a while we got in contact with the owner of the terrain (who was 500 km away) and asked for permission to go in and shoot. No, he said, we won’t let You even bring guns if You enter our terrain. So we sat there listening. Late in the afternoon the dog suddenly went silent, left the bear and went still. We searched for long, called for him, and suddenly found him, looking dead. He couldn’t even lift his head. Totally apatic and unaware. A bit scary. It is a big problem this because I often get tracking missions for the police in the summer, and the laikas are really not suited for this. Otherways they are great!
