Lakeview Bald Eagle - August 3, 2014 Today we received this young Bald Eagle from Lakeview, OR. It was down on the ground, having difficulty flying. Although this 4 yr old female doesn’t have any obvious fractures or wounds, she is not acting like a normal Bald Eagle. She is down on both hocks (see 2nd photo). Her left leg is severely swollen from the knee down through the toes. There are small abrasions on both legs over the tarsometatarsus’ and also on the right wing over the radius/ulna, and also on the left wrist. The bird is very thin and dehydrated. We administered 60 mls of LRS with 80mg of Ca EDTA (lead chelation) and 8 mg of DexNaP (for shock and inflammation), Vitamin B complex (for nerve damage and possible anemia), Iron Dextran (for anemia) and Baytril (antibiotic). No fractures or luxations were palpated. Possible diagnoses include electrocution and/or lead poisoning, and there is a possibility the bird sustained some sort of blunt force trauma. Radiographs are scheduled for Monday, along with a pending blood lead test. #centraloregon #inbend #inredmond #insisters #wildliferehabilitation
