Lakshmana was Awake On the first night in the forest, Lakshmana kept watch while Ram and Sita went to sleep. That is when Nidra, the goddess of sleep, approached him. He begged the goddess to leave him alone for fourteen years so that he could guard his brother and sister-in-law night and day. The goddess, impressed by his act of filial devotion, agreed. Guha latter came and requested Lakshmana to take rest, duly expressing his readiness to guard Rama and Sita by keeping awake the whole night. Lakshmana expressed his unwillingness to lie down in the presence of his elder brother and sister in law and preferred to remain awake. Lakshmana then spent the night talking with Guha, voicing grief for his royal father as well as his affectionate mothers.
